Foundations of Vedic Astrology

What is Jyotish?

Jyotish (Vedic Astrology) is the ancient Indian science of light — 'Jyoti' means light. It maps the positions of celestial bodies at the time of birth to understand an individual's karma, dharma, and life patterns. Unlike Western astrology which uses the Tropical zodiac, Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac (accounting for precession of equinoxes).

The Birth Chart (Kundli)

A Kundli is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. It consists of 12 houses (bhavas), 12 signs (rashis), and 9 planets (grahas). The Ascendant (Lagna) — the rising sign at birth — is the most important point. Each house governs specific life areas: 1st (self), 7th (marriage), 10th (career), etc.

Key Differences from Western Astrology

Vedic uses the Sidereal zodiac (fixed stars), while Western uses the Tropical (seasonal). Vedic includes Rahu and Ketu (lunar nodes) as full planets. It also uses a unique system of Nakshatras (27 lunar mansions) and Dashas (planetary periods) for precise timing of events.
